Within the past 9 months or so, I have developed this fascination with incorporating a few pearls in my work.  I bought my first strands and last year’s Denver Gem & Mineral show, not certain how I would use them, but I knew I wanted some just in case inspiration struck!  I’m happy to report that it did.

I find it amusing the images pearls conjure up for me.

June Cleaver with her simple strand in the perfect dress as she did her housework.

Barbara Bush with her more dramatic strands that always managed to catch my eye every time she wore them.

And then my mother, who wore a strand on her wedding day and a few special occasions.

I think they symbolize a classic look.  They used to remind me of a different time.

Now my perspective has changed.  I’ve noticed them more.  Perhaps the colors, shapes and uses have changed.  I’ve added them to my Treescape earrings and my Express Yourself earrings.  I think when someone is making a personal style statement with the jewelry they wear, pearls can be elegant, just as they can be casual.  A statement of the times perhaps?  A change in attitude?  I do know change is somewhere in the mix of how I think about them.

I find myself continuing to reach for them as components my recent works.  I find them to be an extremely nice compliment to the metal colors I use.  They blend but don’t overwhelm a piece.

The way pearls are created.  A tiny spec of sand or food that becomes an irritant to the oyster, so it coats that sand with layers of nacre to smooth and become a delicate shield.  Maybe that’s it, the beauty of pearls for me is that they symbolize badges of honor, protection for those who wear them?  One of life’s lessons, something beautiful can occur when one works to form a protective shield?  Well, I’m sure we all have our take on this.  What I do know is that I do find them quite lovely and you will continue to see them in my work.

Until next time, aspire to be more as an artist and a person.
